Talk: “The Saint-Nazaire Pocket and Life in Batz-sur-Mer”
Wednesday 25 November 2026
from 18:00
Presentation
A talk by historian Michel Mahé, organised by the ACMTR.
In August 1944, Allied forces swept through Brittany, liberating Rennes, Vannes and Nantes. As they advanced eastward towards Germany, the Loire estuary and Saint-Nazaire were left behind. Saint-Nazaire then became a strategic German stronghold known as the “Saint-Nazaire Pocket”. For more than 120,000 civilians trapped inside, alongside 32,000 German soldiers, the occupation lasted an additional nine months marked by hardship, shortages, hunger, cold and suffering. The Saint-Nazaire Pocket was finally liberated on 11 May 1945, becoming the last French territory to regain its freedom.
